The Ed Sullivan Plate-Spinning Guy (Solution)

Category: Music — jerry @ 8:33 am

I wrote just over a year ago about trying to identify the frenetic music always being played while the Ed Sullivan Plate-Spinning guy (Next contest: What was his name and whatever happened to him. I have to think he died quite young–from hypertension or somesuch). My new best friend Michael Goettee, whom I now owe a cup of coffee, has finally identified it as Aram Khachaturian’s “Sabre Dance”:

Just try and sit still (or spin plates) listening to that.

P.S. My benefactor has his own website, I see, and is a heck of an artist. Please visit him at MichaelGoattee.com and buy something and maybe I can get out of this whole cup of coffee thing (‘cuz I’m sure he’d insist on Starbucks).

UPDATE: Never mind on the second contest, I found out the plate-spinning guy’s name is Erich Brenn. There’s finally a video up at Youtube of him doing this, but I’m not allowed to embed it in the blog so you can watch it here. (But it’s got the WRONG MUSIC!!)

  1. watching this on America’s got talent reminded me of spinning plates on the ed sullivan show.

YouTube got me to the video, Wiki got me to the song.

But I am so disappointed that there isn’t a video of Erich Brenn spinning plates to the Sabre Dance.

It’s such a vivid memory with feeling – that ‘urgency’ that disaster is about to happen at any moment. :)
