The Speech To Our Children

Category: Opinion — jerry @ 3:51 pm

***

The prepared text of President Barack Obama’s back-to-school address scheduled for Tuesdays, as released in advance by the White House:

OBAMA: Hello, everyone — how’s everybody doing today? I’m here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we’ve got students tuning in from all across America, kindergarten through 12th grade. I’m glad you all could join us today.

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now, with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little longer this morning.

I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived in Indonesia for a few years, and my mother didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday — at 4:30 in the morning.

Now I wasn’t too happy about getting up that early. A lot of times, I’d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I’d complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and say, “This is no picnic for me either, buster.”

So I know some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I’m here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I’m here because I want to talk with you about your education and what’s expected of all of you in this new school year.

Now I’ve given a lot of speeches about education. And I’ve talked a lot about responsibility.

“Obama Will Brainwash Our Children!!”

Category: Opinion — jerry @ 11:01 am

The main front page of our local OMAHA WORLD HERALD featured this story yesterday, and there is quite the buzz from concerned Teabirther parents about their children being “indoctrinated” by an upcoming speech from the President of the United States. (See for example this piece from the ultra-conservative Cato Institute).

Reagan gave such a speech.

As did George H.W. Bush.

But you heard nary a harsh word from the Democrats when those speeches were given. (I guess we don’t love our children as much?!)

Per usual, I am (secretly) loving the goofiness of these folks:

***
Now, Concerned Parents, isn’t it just about time to get those kids bundled up and sent off to Sunday School to learn about the One True God you’ve picked for them?

[Update: Here’s your kids the day after the speech!]:

[Update: I did watch it–and I can’t stop grinning. Make more, teabaggers, make more! You can count on me posting them here. And grinning…

Bill Maher on “The Birthers”

Category: Opinion — jerry @ 5:17 am

Funny stuff from Bill Maher in the LOS ANGELES TIMES:

Never underestimate the ability of a tiny fringe group of losers to ruin everything.

For the last couple of weeks, we’ve all been laughing heartily at the wacky antics of the “birthers” — the far-right goofballs who claim Barack Obama wasn’t really born in Hawaii and therefore the job of president goes to the runner-up, former Miss California Carrie Prejean.

Also, when Obama was sworn in as president, he forgot to give his answer in the form of a question.

And yet, every week, the chorus of conservatives demanding to see his birth certificate grows. It’s like they’re the Cambridge police, Obama’s in his house — the White House — and they need to see some ID.

And there’s nothing anyone can do to convince these folks. You could hand them, in person, the original birth certificate and have a video of Obama emerging from the womb with Don Ho singing in the background … and they still wouldn’t believe it….[Rest of article]

UPDATE: If you hate Bill, you’ll hate him more after watching this:

***
Personally, I love Bill–and I understand where he’s coming from, having seen our country’s collective “intellect” deteriorate starting halfway through the Clinton Administration (not because of Clinton though, but because of Stupid America starting to define him by the quality of his blowjob instead of the quality of his governing–to this day I have friends that, when I mention Clinton, immediately kneejerk into a comment about blowjobs). Then 8 years of Bush and Cheney.

But…I am much more optimistic about our future. The “old folks” of the Religious Right are starting to die off, and being replaced with a new generation of bright, young people. I think the days of candidates like Pat Robertson, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, and their ilk are over. “Stupid” is over; welcome to a Smarter America!

In Case You Missed It: Bill Maher Attacks Obama From The Left

Category: Movies/TV, Opinion — jerry @ 11:46 am

Hey, I’m just being “fair and balanced” here. I love Bill Maher, and I love Obama. First, here’s Maher’s original rant:

***
A day or two later, Bill was interviewed by Wolf Blitzer and was a little mellower:

***
Watching this was worthwhile just to hear Maher describe the Republican Party as now consisting of only “angry white people and Jesus Freaks”. I thought about that and…yeah. That pretty much describes it…

Unlike Maher, though, I understand why Obama doesn’t want to overdo it on making some of his changes–he doesn’t want to lose this next election, nor do I want him to. I mean–who wants Palin and Huckabee taking over in 4 years?! I truly think some of the agenda needs to wait for the second term–the whole converting all of the churches to mosques thing that we’ve all been worrying about, for instance…
