You may have noticed that every movie review here pretty much gets a 5-star review. That’s because those are the only ones I want to post. I watch a couple of dozen movies each month (loving my retirement!!). And in the last 2 years, I’ve posted 11 5-star reviews–so don’t tell me I’m not being selective.

Although you do have permission to disagree with me. I don’t think you will on this movie, though. I absolutely do not remember this one being in the theaters. It came out on DVD recently, and based on Ebert’s glowing review I watched it. I had been unaware that it had been done by writer/director Rod Lurie who has done a couple of other personal-favorite movies. NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH goes down as one of my all-time favorite political thrillers. Smartly written, with great performances from Kate Beckinsale (not just a pretty face) and Vera Farmiga. Loosely based on the fact-set of the Valerie Plame case, this one does not have the convoluted, hard-to-follow plotline that a lot of political thrillers have. I can’t imagine anyone not liking it. Very, very highly recommended:

Cell phone use in moving cars should be illegal in all 50 states. Someday it will be. In the meantime…:

Now I know you kids have heard of The Monkees. The guy that wrote this song is Michael Nesmith, who was one of the Monkees (although I believe they were done when he wrote this). Nesmith also wrote “Different Drum”, which was Linda Ronstadt’s breakout hit. Anyway, this song “Joanne” is written and sung by him here, and is just great. The photo montage is of dearly departed Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward. You youngsters may not be that familiar with Ms. Woodward, so I direct you to watch her fine performance in The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds. The song:
